Aposiopesis is when a sentence is deliberately left unfinished or interrupted to create suspense. It works by stopping suddenly at a point where the speaker can’t or won’t continue, letting the listener or reader fill in the rest and feel the tension. For example, in dialogue you might hear, “If I tell you what happened, you would—” and the rest is left unsaid, leaving a sense of anticipation. This is different from an ellipsis, which marks omitted material or a trailing off but isn’t defined by an abrupt interruption of speech; anticlimax and climax describe the overall rise and fall of tension in a scene rather than a cut-off sentence.
